Writing is simply recording thoughts or ideas on paper. Too often students become overwhelmed by trying to write a paper because they aren't really sure where to begin and what is expected. Parents too believe teaching writing is a complex task. Fortunately, simple assignments can teach volumes about writing. For example, hand-writing a letter to grandma is an excellent activity, especially for younger children. It provides them with the opportunity to practice putting words on paper. Plus, they can begin to work on organizing their thoughts into a cohesive pattern, such as the soccer game in one paragraph and the trip to the grocery store in another. Since we don't always speak in complete sentences, it is helpful to practice writing in complete sentences using capitals and periods.

When writing appears to be a daunting task, parents and students alike will avoid doing it. Break it down into simple exercises that strengthen writing skills and with practice, students will become quite proficient.
